Support for Women and Girls

Advocating the physical safety of female students and their right to an equal and high quality education that encourages their interests in scientific subjects is at the core of all we do. We recognize the crucial role of education for girls, not only in helping them to lead independent, self-determined lives, but also in breaking the cycle of poverty and securing better chances for their children, and fully support the following statement:

“We recognize the importance of gender equality in achieving the right to education for all. We are therefore committed to supporting gender-sensitive policies, planning and learning environments; mainstreaming gender issues in teacher training and curricula; and eliminating gender based discrimination and violence in schools.”
– The Incheon Declaration, endorsed at the World Education Forum, Article 8

The Education for Girls Program works with schools to help remove the barriers that prevent girls from developing their full potential and create a safe, sanitary and nurturing learning environment for them. This includes the provision of supplementary training, specifically for school counselors, on supporting and de-stigmatizing victims of rape and other forms of sexual assault.

In addition, we are raising awareness and funds in support of the Nigerian school girls victimized by Boko Haram in 2014. We work in partnership with the visual artist Mary Mihelic, whose “Running Girl” Series was inspired by the school girls who managed to escape their kidnappers.  More information about this artwork can be found here (click on image):
